Hints on Ordering Seeds

 Many of you have not used the White Bear Lake Seed Library before, so I wanted give you a few hints to make it easier for you.

 

1. SEED DONATIONS: The seed library is run by volunteers and supplied by donations from community members. Without seed donations, there would not be a seed library.  We ask that at the end of the season you harvest some of your seeds to donate back to the seed library or purchase a commercial packet of open-pollinated seeds to donate.  The best seeds to donate are the easy to save seeds such as beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes and native plants. You can donate seeds by bringing them to the curbside delivery area at the library or during a seed pickup.

 

2. SEED AVAILABILITY: Since the seed library is supplied by donations, there are varying amounts of seeds available. Some varieties there is only one packet of seeds and some there are over 30 packets. I try to keep the online list up to date, so please look at it before sending me your order. But even so, there is a chance someone right before you took the last packet. The native plant seed list has a column labeled 'AVAIL'. If it says 'Y' then I have seeds, if it says 'N' then I don't have these seeds. Also, I do not fill orders for school or church gardens—the seed library does not carry large quantities for large gardens.  Also, I reserve the right to limit quantities so that more people can take advantage of the free seeds.

White Bear Lake Seed Library seed packets generally do not have the same amount of seeds as a commercial packet of seeds. In fact, if you donate a commercial packet of seeds, we can split it up into several of our packets of seeds. Most home gardeners don't grow that many of one kind of plant. 

 

How to Get Seeds 

The seeds are housed in the White Bear Lake branch of the Ramsey County libraries. Located at 2150 2nd St, White Bear Lake, MN 55110. 

Hours: M: 10-8, T,W: 1-8, Thr, F,S: 10-5

The seed library is to the right as you enter the WBL library and the seeds are in the set of little drawers. Two binders of information are on the Seed Library table.
