IMPORTANT! Seed Pickup is rescheduled due to freezing drizzle, ice and snow!

If you can come on Monday, Feb 1 at 1:30 pm, I will have your seeds for you to pick up. Monday is predicted to be partially sunny. If you can't come on Monday, I will try for next Saturday. I will wait until later next week to make a decision as weather happens!

You can still order seeds. For Monday's pickup I need your order in by 11 am on Monday. For hopefully, next Saturday's (Feb 6) pickup at 11 am, you have to have your order in by 9 am Saturday.

Hints on Ordering Seeds

Many of you have not used the White Bear Lake Seed Library before, so I wanted give you a few hints to make it easier for you.

1. SEED DONATIONS: The seed library is run by volunteers and supplied by donations from community members. Without seed donations, there would not be a seed library.  We ask that at the end of the season you harvest some of your seeds to donate back to the seed library or purchase a commercial packet of open-pollinated seeds to donate.  The best seeds to donate are the easy to save seeds such as beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes and native plants. You can donate seeds by bringing them to the curbside delivery area at the library or during a seed pickup.

2. SEED AVAILABILITY: Since the seed library is supplied by donations, there are varying amounts of seeds available. Some varieties there is only one packet of seeds and some there are over 30 packets. I try to keep the online list up to date, so please look at it before sending me your order. But even so, there is a chance someone right before you took the last packet. The native plant seed list has a column labeled 'AVAIL'. If it says 'Y' then I have seeds, if it says 'N' then I don't have these seeds. Also, I do not fill orders for school or church gardens—the seed library does not carry large quantities for large gardens.  Also, I reserve the right to limit quantities so that more people can take advantage of the free seeds.

The seed lists are on the right hand side of the home page of this blog.

White Bear Lake Seed Library seed packets generally do not have the same amount of seeds as a commercial packet of seeds. In fact, if you donate a commercial packet of seeds, we can split it up into several of our packets of seeds. Most home gardeners don't grow that many of one kind of plant.

How to Get Seeds

The seeds are housed in the White Bear Lake branch of the Ramsey County libraries. Located at 2150 2nd St, White Bear Lake, MN 55110.

Hours: M: 10-8, T,W: 1-8, Thr, F,S: 10-5

The seed library is to the right as you enter the WBL library and the seeds are in the set of little drawers. Two binders of information are on the Seed Library table.

Any other question, please send me an email. wblseedlibrary@gmail.com

Next Seed Pickup Saturday Jan 30th!

Hello Gardeners!

The White Bear Lake Seed Library has received many new donated seeds of lettuce, melon, squash, and other vegetables. Check the blog to find out what is new.

The blog site has changed a bit. Thanks to Meghan Meyer who re-formatted and placed all the seed lists into Google Sheets, the seed lists are much more readable! The seed list is now 3 seed lists: one for vegetables and herbs, one for annuals and perennials and one for native plant seeds. If you look on the right hand side of the home page of the blogsite you will find the links to the seed lists. Let me know if you have any problems using the new lists.

Plant Companions

Seed Talk, February 9, 2021 6:30 pm on Zoom

Will planting marigolds by your tomatoes really keep away harmful bugs? Does planting tomatoes next to cabbage repel caterpillars from eating cabbage leaves?

Is companion planting a bunch of mumbo-jumbo or is there science to back it up?

I’ll share some proven plant companions that will help your garden grow.

As always, seed talks are community get-togethers! Please share you experiences and questions at the seed talk. You must register in advance for this Zoom seed talk.

Feb Seed Talk

If you find the event is full please let me or the library know. The number of participants can be increased. Also, you must sign up 2 hours in advance so there is time for the facilitator to send you the email to join the meeting.

Do You Need Seeds?

The next seed pickup is Saturday Jan 30th; 11:00-11:30 am at the White Bear Lake library’s parking lot.  Also, due to someone who couldn’t make it on Saturday, I’ll be at the library’s parking lot for you to pick up your seeds on Monday, Feb 1st at 1:30 pm. Please specify which pick up date you will be coming. Now it gets dark too soon to have a seed pickup later in the day during a weekday. Also, as it is winter, the date may have to be rescheduled due to snow storms or excessive cold. Look at the seed lists on the blogsite. Order seeds by 9 am Jan 30th by sending me a list of specific seeds you want at wblseedlibrary@gmail.com.

If Jan 30th doesn’t work for you I can meet you at the White Bear Lake library’s parking lot on a different day. Just send me an email and we can work out a time. Also, if you’d like to package seeds you can pick up supplies at this time, but please send me an email so I can put together the supplies before you come.
